Offering ideas and creative solutions on how to make one's life as fulfilling as possible both physically and mentally when faced with physical challenges is an important and integral part of what we strive to do.

In everyday life, creative pursuits can prove to be very valuable to people with sight impairment, hearing impairment and other physical disabilities. To some, it even becomes a new life force, allowing them to navigate through difficult or challenging days with greater ease and a sense of purpose.  That can mean anything that stimulates the mind and energizes the body; creative writing, photography, music, drama, dance, pottery, art, painting, etc. Creative people who have outlets that they can indulge in are proven to be happier than others without.  The importance of a creative activity can certainly improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to help cope with a physical illness or disability.

Art is especially helpful in releasing negative thoughts and emotions by challenging the negative energy in a more productive and creative method.  With the help of any art form, they can feel more peaceful, express themselves more freely, and improve and enhance their physical, mental and emotional well-being. With the aim to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-esteem and self-awareness, having a creative outlet helps increase both physical and emotional health in a positive way.

Communication through art

Many people with disabilities can have trouble communicating.  Art, music and creativity helps those express themselves when communication is challenging. For a person who cannot speak, a dance performance may clearly communicate even the most complex message.  For a person who has limited mobility, singing with emotion may provoke a direction toward a state of clarity and joy.

Through self-expression, one can immerse themselves in a creative activity that stimulates and energizes the mind, combats depression, and help to feel more in control of one's life.  Art provides people with disabilities the opportunity to create something uniquely their own, which is empowering.

A new sense of purpose

In the center of an art market in Brooklyn New York, a young woman was selling her handmade jewelry.  Her booth also displayed stuffed, handmade miniature owl pillows of all colors and design. These whimsical owls were so original and captivating.  The young woman mentioned her 85 year old disabled Grandmother in Texas had individually sewn each owl pillow and shipped them to her granddaughter to sell.  Creating these owls gave her grandmother a new sense of purpose and happiness, adding a welcoming new excitement into her life.  This project has since motivated her to create newer designs for her granddaughter to sell.

An outlet to express emotions

The Universal language of art unites people of all ages and (dis)abilities, stemming back thousands of years when people's natural desire to express themselves have been through art and creative outlets.  "The human impulse to create art is universal. Art has been a way to communicate beliefs and express ideas about the human experience throughout all stages of civilization and in every region of the world..."  Annenberg Foundation, 2014

Creating self-expression and joy in one's life is important to health and mental well-being.  We as humans learn to release negative thoughts and emotions by putting these emotions into productive and creative venues.  Perhaps learning a new instrument, singing, dancing, writing, acting, painting, sewing, sculpting, even cooking and baking are great creative outlets.  For those with mobility issues, sight or hearing impairment, there are many choices to immerse one's self into a world of artistic expression. -- Audrey Leonard
