Fall Prevention Tips for the Holidays

Stay Mindful and "Present" for a safe and happy holiday!

MaxiAids

Throughout this busy holiday month, MaxiAids wants you to be mindful of your every move to avoid unexpected falls and injury.  With so much distraction during the holidays (and other day to day distractions all year 'round), it's important to be aware of your surroundings at all times to prevent falls.  Every step we take can potentially end up in a fall.  When living with a disability, it's so important to be conscious of where we go, what we do and how we go about doing it.  That's why at MaxiAids we want to provide you with suggestions and products to help reduce those chances of hurting yourself.  Accidents happen so quickly, and in seconds a person's life can change.

So what does it really mean to be mindful and present?

MaxiAids

Mindfulness:  The practice of becoming more fully aware of the present moment...

Being Present:  Learn to focus completely on doing that one thing. Pay attention to every aspect of what you’re doing...

The importance of these two words can be detrimental to living a safe and accident-free life.  Awareness of your thoughts and actions when faced with challenges such as low vision, mobility issues and hearing loss is essential to your safety.

As we age or have mobility issues, falls are very common and happen more frequently. That is why it's so important to remove distractions, and stick with one activity at a time.  Multi-tasking when we are busy seems natural, but we put ourselves at risk when doing so.  Besides staying mindful and present, it is also important to eliminate mental and physical interferences as we walk or do chores.

MaxiAids MaxiAids

There are ways to help prevent falls, and keep your environment safe and clutter free...

  • Keep floors free of objects you can trip over (small vases, plants, storage boxes, low foot rests, shoes, pet products, etc.), remove throw rugs, and hide away electrical cords
  • Keep furniture to a minimum, and have more open space to move around
  • Keep work areas clean and always mop up spills right after they happen
  • Add grab bars where needed; bathroom, hallways, bedrooms
  • Use non-slip mats in showers and bathtubs
  • Wear good support sneakers or shoes with rubber bottoms to prevent slipping
  • Avoid standing on chairs or tables to reach for something; only use sturdy step stools or ladders with handrails
  • Keep hallways, stairways, doorways and walkways well lit
  • Use walking aids to help you when necessary
  • Practice balance exercises (ask your doctor what exercises are safe for you to do to increase better balance and equilibrium)
  • Keep distractions at a minimum

While staying mindful and present in your surroundings, you will notice how focused you will become while walking, getting out of bed, bathing, cooking, etc. Being mindful will keep you safer and give you an overall feeling of relaxation and well-being.

Mindfulness has its many benefits-- helping reduce stress and anxiety, improve listening skills, and increase general happiness. So stay present, be safe, and have a happy holiday with MaxiAids' assistive products, mobility equipment and walkers, low vision aids, blind accessories, products for the blind and visually impaired, and other home safety products to help you live a safe, active, and productive life.   -- Audrey Leonard

Choose a path to well-being!

MaxiAids provides specialized, accessible workouts for the blind and those with physical challenges

Exercise ProductsAs summer is coming to a closing, school has begun, and the weather starts to get cooler, it's important to stay fit!  We tend to spend more time indoors when winter approaches and the days get shorter.  Making exercise a part of daily life helps improve strength, energy, and an overall feeling of mental well-being, helping to combat those winter blues...

MaxiAids offers fitness CDs, DVDs and exercise equipment to enhance the lives of those with disabilities.  People who are living with blindness, low vision, hearing impairment, arthritis, medical conditions and special needs are much more prone to poor circulation and muscle tone, poor posture, and excess body weight due to lack of exercise and sitting for long periods of time. With exercise options being offered for use in the privacy of one's own home, many of these guided exercise programs as well as exercise products will help with flexibility and keep people with disabilities physically and mentally stimulated.  When it comes to limited mobility, there are alternatives to help enhance strength and endurance, while helping to deliver those happy endorphins that seem to always kick in when we stay moving and fit.

How to Exercise if You Have Limited Mobility

The desire and necessity to safely exercise at home and have options to choose from have prompted the creation of CDs, DVDs and exercise products that specialize in motivational exercises for the blind, low vision, and those with physical challenges.  Morning and evening stretches with guided meditations can be found in some of these instruction sets. Beginning Yoga for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a 5 CD set which now offers yoga to the blind and the low vision community. Gretchen Hein, a certified yoga teacher and her partner, Marty Klein, blind author, workshop leader and yoga student, combined their knowledge and health concepts to bring a motivational and inspiring introduction to the basics of yoga with 24 basic yoga poses specially designed for those with little or no sight.

RN Mary Ann Wilson's most popular routines from public television series is now offered in a 2 DVD set called Sit and Be Fit which helps improve core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, circulation and reaction time. They are fun rehabilitative movements with lighthearted music for those who are wheelchair bound or sit most of the day. Great for seniors and those who want to strengthen their upper body to avoid weakness and stiffness.

Products such as the exercise peddlers can be used for arms and legs, allowing a safe and gentle form of low-impact aerobic exercise that is ideal for stimulating circulation, and the resistance tubing and exercise resistance bands improve balance and daily living.

Look to MaxiAids for a variety of exercise products that enhance strength, mobility and motivation, products for the blind and visually impaired, and products for mobility  --Audrey Leonard

Before beginning any exercise routine, always check with a doctor.

Spring is finally here and with that comes sunshine, clear skies and beautiful weather that should inspire all of us to get active and enjoy the outdoors. The best part about this time of year is that we have several months of spring and summer ahead of us, making this the perfect opportunity to set goals, gear up and plan to get outside as much as possible. Whether you are looking to protect your eyes, see things clearer, increase your mobility or just make life a little easier, here are 5 Easy Ways to Make Your Spring and Summer More Accessible:

5 Easy Ways To Make Spring and Summer More Accessible - MaxiAids.com

1. The sun is so bright, you gotta wear shades: No warm weather season is complete without sunglasses. As fun as it is to bask in the sunlight, it's equally as important to protect your eyes. Sunglasses are vital to protecting your vision and helping you alleviate painful exposure to light and harmful UV rays.

Cocoons Low Vision Sunglasses - MaxiAids.com

MaxiAids offers a wide selection of protective sunglasses eyewear and UV protective sunglasses to help maintain your eye health and minimize light sensitivity. Sunglasses options from MaxiAids include Cocoons Low Vision Sunglasses available in four specific tints to help increase visual acuity, Cocoons and NoIR fitovers that are designed to be worn over prescription glasses, flip up sunglasses that you can attach to existing eyewear, and stylish all-purpose protective sunglasses suitable for everyone.

2. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood ... so let's get moving: When the sun comes up on a picture-perfect spring or summer morning, you might find it hard to look on the bright side if you don't move as well as you used to. The good news is you don't have to let decreased or limited mobility put a damper on your outlook because MaxiAids has mobility solutions to meet all of your special needs and get you moving, including these brand new electric scooters from eWheels that are the perfect combination of speed, safety, performance and personality!

These colorful, stylish scooters even come shipped fully assembled and ride ready so you can get rev up that engine and revel in the outdoors as soon as possible.

3. I can see clearly now the strain is gone: Are you tired of squinting and straining your eyes whenever you are at a concert or a ball game, on vacation or outside trying to enjoy nature? Whether you have low vision and are seeking a way to magnify your view or simply want the clearest focus you can possibly get from a distance, these innovative and lightweight head worn binoculars from Beecher Optical Products can help.

4. Put Me Into The Ball Game, Take Me Out of the Crowd: Just because a child or adult is visually impaired, it does not mean he or she has to sit on the sidelines when it comes to playing sports or remaining active. Audible and beeping balls make it possible for sporting activities and competitions to be more inclusive, and MaxiAids is proud to offer a wide selection of accessible balls to help anyone with low vision enjoy the upcoming spring and summer months on the field with their friends and teammates.

5. I would walk 500 miles, without even realizing it: While we all make an effort to exercise year-round and even set goals at different points of the calendar year, it is no secret that the spring and summer give us extra motivation to ramp up our fitness routines. With that said, a little positive reinforcement goes a long way and by tracing your everyday steps and seeing how many calories you've burned along the way, that just might be the key to gaining some confidence to help boost your desire to stay active.
