Goalball has grown into a premier sport at the International Paralympics. It is played by two opposing teams of 3 blind players who try to throw the ball (which has bells embedded in it) into the other team's goal. Players use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball. Blindfolds allow low vision (or partially sighted) players to compete on an equal footing with blind players. Blindfolds also make Goalball a great sport that can be played as a recreational game among blind and sighted players, with blindfolds again worn to level the playing field.
The ULTIMAX Goalball has a foam-like textured vinyl outer layer that absorbs shock and is easy to grip. On the inside, bells bounce off the rough surface with the motion of the ball, so that even at slow, rolling speeds, they make a loud sound that aids in the players' tracking of the ball. The sound is made even louder by the 8 holes in the outer shell that allow the sound to be transmitted and heard more clearly. The Goalball has a 9.5 diameter and weighs 2.75 lbs.
