Zeiss Binocular Reading Charts consist of a transparent test film with successive, three-line text groupings of different sizes. The texts of the upper and lower lines are polarizing. If appropriate analyzers are placed in front of the patient's eyes, he or she will be able to see the upper line with one eye and the bottom line with the other. The middle, non-polarizing line can be seen with both eyes. When in use, the test film is positioned in its plastic frame at a medium reading tilt in front of a white, curved and diffusely reflecting surface. Testing is performed in normal room lighting.

The Binocular Reading Charts permit binocular comparison of coherent reading texts under binocular conditions. This aid can therefore be used to determine reading binocularity in general, and that of low vision patients in particular.
